Asphalt Shingle Product and Test Standards

ASTM E108 – Known as “Fire Tests of Roof Coverings”, this standard tests for exterior fire hazards. All roof coverings have a class rating, from A to C.  For instance, glass shingle roof systems were traditionally classified as Class A, while organic shingles were classified as C.

ULC S-107 – This standard is the Canadian equivalent for ASTME108, or “Fire Tests of Roof Coverings.”

ASTM D225 – This roof product standard is called, “Asphalt Shingles (Organic Felt) Surfaced With Mineral Granules”, which refers to the industry requirements for organic roof shingles.

ASTM D3018 – Also known as “Class A Asphalt Shingles Surfaced with Mineral Granules”, this standard exams Class A glass shingles in this specific category.

ASTM D3161 – This product standard is called, “Wind Resistance of Asphalt Shingles”, which is essentially a laboratory wind test.

ASTM D3462 – This roof product standard is referred to as, “Asphalt Shingles Made from Glass Felt and Surfaced with Mineral Granules.” Similar to ASTMD3018, it tests requirements for glass shingles in this specific category.

CSA A123.1-M – This more complex standard known as, “Asphalt Shingles Surfaced with Mineral Granules”, tests requirements for organic roof shingles.

CSA A123.5-M – Similar to others above, this product standard is called, “Asphalt Shingles Made with Glass Felt Saturated with Mineral Granules”, and tests for requirements for glass shingles in this specific category.
