The 2 Main Types of Asphalt Shingles

Although there are various types of asphalt shingles to choose from in terms of color, style, design, and size, there are two primary categories that most asphalt roof shingles can fall under: organic and fiberglass. Organic Roof Shingles

Organic asphalt roof shingles are not as popular as they used to be. In fact, they have not been manufactured since 2008. They were manufactured from organic materials like recycled felt paper, wood chips, and even used rags. A layer of asphalt was added to the design for water-proofing advantages. Compared to fiberglass, organic shingles are more durable due to their thick cellulose layer; however, they do not come highly recommended for many reasons. Some of the most common complaints are that they add significant weight to a roof, require a lot more maintenance, are prone to more damages, and cost more to purchase.

Fiberglass Roof Shingles

Similar to organic shingles, fiberglass composite roof shingles have a layer of asphalt that protects the underlying fiberglass mat from water, moisture, and more. This mat is light weight and resistant to splitting and tearing. Both products are water-proof, but fiberglass shingles have an additional layer of ceramic granules on top of the asphalt that reflect ultra violet rays. This is highly effective if you need to protect your roof from sun and heat. They are also cheaper to purchase, making the initial investment much lower than that of organic shingles. These shingles come highly recommended, especially for homes and buildings in areas where heavy precipitation (snow, ice, rain storms, etc.) is common.
