Can Summer Heat Damage My Roof?

One of the most important parts of routine maintenance for roofs is preventative measures and inspections. Sun and Heat on a Roof

There are various ways the summer climate conditions can negatively affect a roof, but the most common include rotted roof decking, mold or mildew growth, and damaged shingles. Here is what you need to know about each potential threat to your roof:

▶ Rotted Roof Decking

At the base of your roof is where you will find the decking, which is meant to support the weight of the roof shingles. Although this area is typically covered in several other protective layers, it is usually made from wood (plywood in particular), which is not resistant to water, and therefore, at higher risk of rotting. When roofs have leaks in these top layers, water can make its way down to the decking, and cause this type of problem. Another way rooted decking occurs is when an attic or roof is not properly ventilated. In this case, the condensation created by the humidity levels will seep into the decking, and cause the wood to rot overtime.

▶ Mold and Mildew

Where there is moisture, there is the potential for mold and mildew growth. And in the summer, heat and humidity increase the levels of condensation, and if your roof is not in good condition, leaks can happen. When moisture accumulates in roofing systems, it is common for such organic growth to develop. Mold and mildew is usually found developing between roof shingles where it is dark and wet. Spores can easily spread through any tiny cracks or openings in the roof and cause this problem.

▶ Damaged Roof Shingles

If you have rotted roof decking and mold growth, you are bound to have damaged shingles. Aside from the previous two summer threats to roofing systems, shingles can also warp, bend, break, or discolor as a result of rising temperatures, and extreme heat. These damages are further boosted by poor attic and roof ventilation.
